If my family and I had to evacuate to a country with a completely different culture and I had to choose three things that I hold dear to take with me I would take my Bible because it would be a reminder that no matter where I was God was with me. That Bible has special meaning because I have underlined favorite verses and because my husband gave it to me. It also has bookmarkers in it given to me by my mom. I would also take a childhood photo of me with my parents to represent my childhood web. And, I am assuming my dog would come with us because she is an integral part of our family, but I would take a picture of her along as well.
If I had to keep one item I think I would keep the Bible and try to put the photo of my family inside it. However, I think when it comes down to it, representations are just that. Your culture is who you are and what you believe and you take that with you where ever you go. It is the relationships you hold dear to your heart and the memories that no one can take from you that matter.
Suzanne, like you I assumed my dogs would be coming as part of my family but if they didn't I would have also included a picture of them. I also agree to you that when it comes down to it, representations are just that and as long as you have your family your culture is who you are and you do take it with you wherever you go.
ReplyDeleteMy dogs are just as important to me. I would take them over any itmes first, if they were to be part of the 3 items. Pictures are important they remind us of life years ago. Trying to slip one into your bible is a good idea. Its a good thing that this isnt actually happening.
ReplyDeleteSuzanne,
ReplyDeleteI think that family pictures are important part of our life because when we see them we recall everything that was going on at that moment, like smells, noises, who else was there, who took the picture, why the picture was taken, and so on. Let me share with you that when I was a girl my parents used to buy a film for the camera only for vacations, birthdays, and other holidays.

ReplyDeleteMaterials things are not as important when you think about what you hold dear to your heart. I know that where ever I go no one can take away the family love and value that I have within me.
Suzanne,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your post. I also feel material things are only representations of who we are and our culture. Like you said, your culture is a part of you and is with you no matter what. I know my family pictures are important to me, because they help me remember the little details of special moments in my life. If something like this really occurred, then my top priority would be my family. Losing materials would be upsetting, but I would still have my memories, values, and beliefs that make up who I am and my culture.
Suzanne,
ReplyDeleteI agree that family photos are an essential representation and connection of our lives and our cultures. I too would take an important family photo with me. Your bible and its importance is something I admire. I believe your faith is strongly interwoven into your culture!!
I too would take my dog! No matter what she is one of my children.
I enjoyed reading your post as always!
